Although there are numerous factors that can cause an air conditioning system to under-perform or just stop working, some are more common than others. Hopefully you’ll never face any of them; but if you do, knowing what can go wrong will help you better understand what your HVAC contractor might share with you following a pre-repair diagnosis.

  1. Frozen coil in the air handler

The inside component of your AC system is known as the air handler; in most Connecticut homes, it’s contained in the attic. Inside the air handler are evaporator coils that can freeze up from a loss of refrigerant, poor airflow, and other factors.

  1. Outside unit shuts down

Sometimes the problem with an AC system is as simple as a sudden loss of power stemming either from your outdoor condensing unit or thermostat. If you can’t feel cool air, check to see if the outside unit is functioning and responding to your call for more cool air by lowering the temperature setting.

  1. Outside fan is not working

The fan in your outdoor condensing unit transfers heat from your home to the outdoor air. A fan breakdown, no matter what causes it, will naturally stop the flow of cool air. If not diagnosed quickly, an inoperative fan also could cause damage to the compressor.

  1. Low refrigerant level

Refrigerant is the chemical that cools the air flowing through your AC system. It’s one of the first things an AC technician will check when you report problems with your system.

  1. Faulty wiring

Improper, haphazard, or uncertified A/C wiring is dangerous and a potential fire hazard. Faulty wiring often prevents the system from getting power, or can trip the circuit breaker.
