Geothermal
WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
The word Geothermal comes from the Greek words geo, meaning earth, and thermal, meaning heat. So Geothermal energy is heat from within the earth. Geothermal heat pumps use the Earth, which maintains a consistent temperature of 50 – 55 degrees, to heat and cool our homes and buildings as well as provide hot water.
WHAT IS A GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP?
A Geothermal heat pump, also known as ground source, geo-thermal, geo-exchange, and ground-water, consists of pipes buried in the ground (known as looping) near a building or home in which water/antifreeze mixture circulates through. There are three basic loops;

Open

- Closed-loops – circulates a water-based solution through a loop of under ground pipes. There are the two different types of Closed-loops:
- Vertical – Ideal choice where there is limited land surface.
- Horizontal – Often used land surface is available.
- Open-loops – In ideal conditions where well water is plentiful and low in minerals, this application can be the most economical type.
- Pond (Lake) Loops – Very economical to install when a large body of water is available for use by the geothermal heating and cooling system. Coils of pipe are simply placed on the bottom of the pond or lake to capture the geothermal energy.

The ground loop provides the means of transferring heat to the earth in summer, and extracting heat from the earth in winter. The heat that is removed during the summer can be used as no-cost energy to heat water
IS A GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP CONSIDERED GREEN?
Yes, it is the third largest source of renewable energy in the US because the water is replenished by rainfall and heat is continuously produced inside the earth making it is essentially limitless. EPA study showed geothermal energy is the most environmentally friendly heating/cooling system; the United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory concluded that geothermal energy is more efficient and cost-effective than a conventional residential system and there are many geothermal energy incentives that are available from federal, state, local and utilities. Homeowners who install geothermal systems are eligible for a 30 percent tax credit with no cap. We advise you to consult with your tax expert.
